The Major Arcana
V · The Teaching
The Hierophant
Wisdom and Tradition

"What you have lived is asking to be passed on"
The deeper meaning
The Teaching is the card of wisdom, lineage, and the passing on of what has been lived. The traditional Hierophant is the keeper of tradition, the bridge between the divine and the human community. In the Cocoon Method, The Teaching is not about blind acceptance of authority. It is about embodied knowledge, the wisdom you have earned through living, and the moment it is ready to be passed on. It is also about finding the teaching your body recognises as true, and recognising that you may now be the one with something to transmit.
Upright
When The Teaching appears upright, wisdom is moving, either toward you through a mentor or tradition, or out of you toward someone who needs what you have lived. This is a card of learning and of teaching, of belonging to a lineage larger than yourself. It may be time to seek guidance, or to recognise that your own hard-won knowledge is asking to be shared. Stay discerning, and trust what your body confirms as true.

Reversed
Reversed, The Teaching warns of dogma, of tradition emptied of meaning, of the rule remembered while the meaning is forgotten. It can show blind conformity, or an authority that demands obedience rather than awakening. It can also show wisdom withheld out of fear, or knowledge passed on as control. The reversed card asks you to return to the living source beneath the rule, and to keep only the teaching that still carries real meaning in the body.

The astrology
Taurus is fixed earth, the sign of stability, endurance, and the steady accumulation of value over time. It governs what we hold sacred and are willing to preserve. Taurus does not rush, it deepens. The Teaching carries Taurus because real wisdom is not acquired quickly, it is cultivated, tested, and held over time. Taurus reminds us that the most enduring teachings are the ones that have proven themselves across the seasons.
The chakra
The Throat chakra (Vishuddha) governs expression and the giving and receiving of truth. In The Teaching, the Throat is the channel of transmission, the way wisdom passes through the spoken and heard word. In the Cocoon Method, the Throat is also where you discern whether what you are told resonates as true. An open Throat both speaks honestly and receives teaching with discernment, keeping what fits and releasing what does not.
Somatic prompt
Bring to mind a piece of wisdom you carry, something life has taught you. Place a hand on your throat and another on your heart. Speak it aloud, softly. Notice what happens in your body, whether the throat opens or tightens. The Teaching invites you to use the body as a tuning fork for truth, and to consider what you have lived that is now ready to be passed on to someone who needs it.
