The deeper meaning
The Release is the card of endings and the transformation they make possible. The traditional Death card is rarely about literal death, it is about the profound, necessary endings that clear the way for genuine rebirth. In the Cocoon Method, The Release is the willingness to let a chapter, an identity, or an old version of yourself truly end, rather than dragging its corpse forward. What wants to live waits for what is finished to fall. Nothing new can be born until the old is allowed to die, and the release is sacred precisely because it is the place of letting go.
Upright
When The Release appears upright, something is ending, and the ending is necessary even if it is painful. An old chapter is closing, an identity is being shed, a way of being has run its course. The card does not ask you to mourn forever, it asks you to let the ending be complete so real transformation can occur. What feels like loss is also a clearing. Let what is finished fall. The version of you waiting on the other side cannot be born until the old one is laid to rest.

Reversed
Reversed, The Release shows an ending refused. You are holding what has already gone, clinging to what is over, afraid that letting go will leave you with nothing. This refusal creates stagnation, a life lived in the company of something already dead. The transformation that wants to happen is delayed by your grip. The reversed card asks gently but firmly: what are you holding that has already ended? Releasing it is not the loss you fear, it is the doorway you have been avoiding.

The astrology
Scorpio is fixed water, the sign of death and rebirth, of the deep underworld, of transformation through what is most feared and hidden. Scorpio does not flinch from endings, it dives into them, knowing the only way out is through. The Release carries Scorpio because both understand that real transformation requires a descent, a willingness to let something die completely. Scorpio reminds us that the most powerful regeneration comes from the places we are most afraid to go.
The chakra
The Sacral chakra (Svadhisthana) governs the flow of life, creativity, and the cycles of death and renewal in the body. In The Release, the Sacral is where the old is composted into the new, where endings become the fertile ground of what comes next. In the Cocoon Method, working with this card means letting the body feel the grief and the relief of an ending without freezing the flow. When the Sacral moves freely, death and rebirth become a single continuous current.
Somatic prompt
Sit with your feet on the ground. Bring to mind something that is ending, or that needs to end. Notice the holding in your body, perhaps a clutching in the belly. Breathe low into your pelvis and, on each exhale, imagine setting down something you have been carrying. Silently say: what is finished is allowed to fall. The Release teaches that the body can let go once it stops bracing. Let the breath carry the ending through and out.
